ARNOLD, Calaveras County — Visitors to Calaveras Big Trees State Park should not plan to enter the South Grove area without checking updated restrictions. California State Parks has posted an October 1, 2026 closure covering the South Grove and several nearby trails and roads to support prescribed burning operations.

The restriction affects a popular area of the park near Arnold. It is a geographic closure, not an announcement that the entire state park has shut down.

Which areas does the official notice list?

According to the October 1 California State Parks notice, the closure includes:

  • South Grove and the South Grove Trail;
  • Beaver Creek area;
  • Bradley Grove Trail;
  • the fire road around South Grove;
  • Walter W. Smith Memorial Parkway south of the Stanislaus River.

State Parks identifies prescribed burning as the reason for the restriction. The published notice does not establish a firm reopening date. Visitors should treat the listed locations as closed until park officials announce otherwise.

Why is prescribed burning planned?

California State Parks and CAL FIRE previously described a series of fuel treatments planned for Calaveras Big Trees, including work around South Grove and other areas. The September 21 announcement said the planned work covered approximately 780 acres across several treatment areas, with timing dependent on weather and air-quality conditions. That acreage is a planned treatment area, not evidence that 780 acres have already burned.

Prescribed fire is used as a land-management tool to reduce accumulated fuels and support the health of giant sequoia forests. Smoke, operations and access restrictions can vary as conditions change.

What remains available?

The official park information page continues to list day-use hours from sunrise to sunset and separately lists North Grove guided hikes on October 17, 24 and 31. A scheduled event is not a guarantee that it will proceed unchanged, so visitors should verify its status before traveling.

Calaveras Big Trees is located about four miles northeast of Arnold along Highway 4. State Parks lists its contact telephone as (209) 795-2334. Posted fees and park operations may change.

What changes for Arnold residents and visitors?

People planning a South Grove hike should choose another confirmed open route or postpone that part of their visit. Never cross closures or enter an area where fire crews are working. Drivers should also verify park-road access instead of assuming they can reach familiar South Grove trailheads.

California State Parks’ prescribed-burn announcement and South Grove closure notice are the primary sources for this report. They were reviewed October 14, 2026. For local coverage see Arnold News.
